God is looking for Sincerity in our Prayers
After Bruce gets hit by a truck, he has an honest encounter with God in heaven and learns how to pray through God’s eyes in this clip from Bruce Almighty. When God asks him to pray, Bruce begins by praying with words he thinks God would want or expect. But God encourages him to pray what he really cared about; Grace.
“27 God, the searcher of the heart, knows fully our longings,[a]yet he also understands the desires of the Spirit, because the Holy Spirit passionately pleads before God for us, his holy ones, in perfect harmony with God’s plan and our destiny. Romans 8:27 (TPT). When we have the Holy Spirit in our hearts, we have the remarkable ability to connect with the very heart of God. Our hearts are co-mingled; His and ours. He sees our hearts perfectly, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, we can sense His heart for ourselves and for others.
See with the eyes of your heart
Why was God so pleased with Bruce’s prayer in the clip? Because it was His prayer too. Bruce prayed a humble prayer for her happiness and for her very best, even if it meant that he was not in her life anymore. It was an honest sacrificial prayer. He was seeing her through God’s eyes. He was praying God’s prayer for her. How do we know that we can do that? 1 John 5:14 (AMP). “This is the [remarkable degree of] confidence which we [as believers are entitled to] have before Him: that [a]if we ask anything according to His will, [that is, consistent with His plan and purpose] He hears us.”
When we see through God’s eyes, we feel with His heart. We can have a remarkable degree of confidence in our prayers because the Holy Spirit is in our hearts. The fullness of the Spirit of God in us entitles us to God’s attentiveness because it is our inheritance as children of the Living God to commune with God.
Pray for God’s wisdom and understanding
If you are not sure that you know how to pray God’s best prayers, ask Him. “9For this reason, since the day we heard about it, we have not stopped praying for you, asking [specifically] that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom [with insight into His purposes], and in understanding [of spiritual things],10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord [displaying admirable character, moral courage, and personal integrity], to [fully] please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing in the knowledge of God [with deeper faith, clearer insight and fervent love for His precepts]; Colossians 1:9-10 (AMP). We can have insight into God’s purposes, understanding of spiritual things and this transforms us to be more like Jesus by his fervent love.
God doesn’t always answer the way you expect
One prayer that will always be according to God’s best is to simply pray in agreement with Romans 8:26 “And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede[a] on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs[b] too deep for words.”
When God answered Bruce’s prayer later in the movie, it was different than Bruce expected. He did not expect that Grace could be happy with him. He assumed that she would need to find someone else, and he was OK with that because he loved her sacrificially. But God had changed Bruce’s heart so much that he was able to love her properly now. That is the power of God’s transforming love!
Ask Jesus: Lord, help me to know how to pray your perfect prayers.
Purpose in your spirit to agree with Me in all areas of your life. To purpose in your spirit is to decide with your free will that My will is always in your best interest. Get to know Me personally by reading the Word and spending time with Me. I will reveal to you the Truth in Love. I AM the Omni-God. I know everything, see everything, have sovereign control over everything and I AM always Love. Acknowledge that I have the very best for you promised in Jeremiah 29:11. There is no-one you can trust greater than Me. My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

God, Thank you that you are praying for me right now. You know exactly what I need. I agree with what you are praying and doing right now. I pray your very best prayers over this situation, even when I don’t understand what’s happening or see what you are doing. I trust that You are Sovereign, You are Love, and You have the very best in mind for everyone involved. So, I say “Yes” and “Amen” to your plans, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
